Online first aid courses

Connecticut's private sector follows the federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1910.151(b)): no fixed ratio, but absent a nearby clinic or hospital employers must keep one or more adequately trained first-aiders on staff, reachable within OSHA's 3-to-4-minute (high-hazard) to 15-minute (low-hazard) 'near proximity' window. State and local government employees are covered by CONN-OSHA under the Connecticut State Plan.

Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies § 19a-79 (per CGS § 19a-79), administered by the Office of Early Childhood, require that whenever a center or group day care home is operating, at least one staff member hold current CPR certification and at least one have completed a department-approved first aid course of at least 6 hours within the past 3 years. Online courses are accepted.

Connecticut's Good Samaritan law, Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-557b, grants immunity to anyone who in good faith and gratuitously renders emergency first aid or medical assistance, and the same section protects providing, maintaining or using an AED. There is no legal duty to rescue, and the immunity does not extend to gross, willful or wanton negligence.

For registered nurses in Connecticut there is no general mandatory CE-hours standard for renewal — only a 2-contact-hour PTSD/suicide-screening training every six years — so a CPR/BLS course does not by itself satisfy a licensure-CE requirement. CPR/AED, ACLS and PALS are among the eligible continuing-education activities, and for surrounding care roles CPR and first-aid certification is commonly required by employers.

In Connecticut, aides in an assisted living services agency (ALSA) operating within a managed residential community — overseen by the Department of Public Health — must be certified nurse aides or home health aides, and first-aid and CPR certification is commonly required by employers as a condition of employment. A recognized, up-to-date certificate meets this expectation, in addition to occupational training, and is renewed periodically.

In Connecticut, foster and prospective adoptive families are licensed under Regs. Conn. State Agencies §§ 17a-145-130 to 17a-145-160, administered by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Licensing Unit, and first-aid and CPR from a recognized organization is part of the pre-service caregiver preparation expected before children are placed. Certification should be kept current and is one requirement in addition to pre-service training, the home study and the suitability assessment.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Connecticut for personal, childcare licensing, and employer requirements, with certification valid for 2 years. Online training is accepted for the workplace requirement (no explicit ban exists), though OSHA recommends a hands-on skills-demonstration component, especially for CPR.
